Iranian farmers protest water shortages

Iran Focus

London, 20 July - Farmers in Iran are protesting the government’s failure to deal with the severe drought problem that has left many unable to grow crops to feed the people.

Just outside the city of Varzaneh, farmers have been gathering on a daily basis, next to a dry canal that once irrigated their farms, to plead for help from the mullahs, while holding up signs that read “How long will you eat your bread made with our blood?”.

Protester Mostafa Benvidi said: “We are the people. Help the people. At night they go to bed hungry!”

Iranians face more frequent power outages as drought continues

Iran Focus

London, 18 July - For more than ten years, large parts of Iran have been immensely affected by drought. The rainfall in the country is currently at the lowest level that it has been for fifty years. Official figures indicate that this year has seen more than 25 per cent less rain than last year.

To make the situation even more critical, this summer is turning out to be extremely hot. This and the annual increase in the consumption of electricity is causing power shortages to become more and more commonplace.

Iran’s Water Crisis

Iran Focus

London, 4 July - Population and agricultural growth puts a strain on water resources. Many countries in the Middle East are suffering from a water shortage due to drought as well as mismanagement. This can lead to economic and consequently political instability.

One of the most vulnerable countries is Iran, who has not developed an effective system of water supply and use.

In fact, drought poses a bigger threat for the future of Iran than the countries it considers “enemies” — US and Israel.

Residents of the Khuzestan provincial cities of Khorramshahr, Abadan, and Ahvaz say their water supplies have been polluted for days despite pledges by Iranian authorities to quickly resolve the problem.

Iran: Discrimination Extends to People With Disabilities

Iran Focus

London, 28 Jun - Many sectors of society in Iran are discriminated against by Iran, including religious and ethnic minorities and women. Human rights watch and the Center for Human Rights in Iran have also drawn attention to the discrimination against people with disabilities.

The two organisations released a 71-page report detailing the extent of the problem in Iran. The document is entitled “‘I am Equally Human’: Discrimination and Lack of Accessibility for People with Disabilities in Iran” and it highlights that the public transport system, healthcare centres, government offices and many more places are inaccessible to people with disabilities.
